One of the worst days in the history of the United States occurred on September 11th, 2001. This day did not just come and go in a twenty four hour period. Rather, the tragedies of September 11th lasted for years. The grief that people felt was very real, personal, and lasting. To this day, there are still people in the United States who are dealing with that very real sense of sadness and loss. The process of healing has been on-going since that time.

There have been many efforts to try to deal with the pain of September 11th. There was a massive, heart-warming, outpouring of support from the American people. This was the biggest question in the aftermath of the terrorist attack—how would the American people respond? The answer is that they came up with all sorts of charities, memorials, and other shows of support. There were many projects that attracted attention in the years that came after, but few attracted as much attention as the American Quilt Memorial. Kevin Held is the founder of the American Quilt Memorial. He had no previous experience with non-profits. He fully believed in his own ability to successfully manage this project though, which required organizing volunteer participation/groups from all over the country, fund raising, and a number of complicated logistics.
